IBKR Explores Stablecoin Rollout for Round-the-Clock Funding Access

Interactive Brokers is considering introducing its own stablecoin to give clients the ability to fund accounts instantly—anytime, any day—bypassing delays tied to traditional banking hours. The financial giant, with a market cap near $110 billion, is exploring whether to issue its own stable digital currency or support trusted third-party stablecoins, depending on regulatory and operational feasibility.

Chairman Thomas Peterffy confirmed the company’s interest in the project but remained skeptical of the long-term intrinsic value of cryptocurrencies. “If people accept it and assign value, that’s fine,” he said, “but I still don’t fully buy in.” Despite his caution, the move signals the firm’s intent to stay competitive as crypto infrastructure gains ground in mainstream finance.

Currently, IBKR clients can already trade digital assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Solana, thanks to the company’s partnerships with Paxos and its investment in crypto infrastructure provider Zero Hash. Introducing a stablecoin could enhance these services by enabling faster, more efficient transactions—particularly during off-market hours.

With nearly 3.9 million active customer accounts as of June 2025—up 32% year-over-year—Interactive Brokers has experienced significant user growth. Its stock performance has also been strong, outpacing industry averages with a 47% gain so far this year.

The initiative comes at a time of increasing regulatory clarity, following the recent enactment of the GENIUS Act, which established clear legal guidelines for stablecoin issuance and compliance. Competitors such as Robinhood have already moved forward, rolling out USDG through a consortium model.

While the stablecoin plan is still in early stages, it highlights Interactive Brokers’ ambition to modernize its funding operations, offer more flexible client options, and prepare for a financial ecosystem that runs on blockchain rails 24/7.
