Dubai Regulator Orders KuCoin to Halt Unlicensed Crypto Operations
Dubai’s crypto regulator has issued a warning against cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin, saying the platform is operating in the emirate without the required authorization. The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), which oversees digital asset activities in Dubai, stated that KuCoin does not currently hold a license to provide crypto services within the region. Because of this, the regulator has instructed the exchange to stop offering its services to users in Dubai until it obtains the proper approval.
VARA emphasized that all crypto firms wishing to operate in Dubai must first secure a license and comply with the regulatory framework designed to protect investors and ensure market transparency. The authority noted that companies offering trading, custody, or other virtual asset services without permission may face enforcement action.
Dubai has been working to position itself as a global hub for digital assets, but regulators have also made it clear that compliance with local laws is mandatory. Authorities say the licensing system is meant to encourage responsible innovation while also preventing risks such as fraud, financial crime, and consumer harm.
The statement regarding KuCoin highlights Dubai’s growing efforts to tighten oversight of the crypto sector. As more exchanges and blockchain companies move into the region, regulators are increasing monitoring to ensure businesses follow established rules.
While KuCoin remains a major global crypto trading platform, its ability to serve users in Dubai could be limited unless it receives regulatory clearance. The exchange has not yet publicly detailed how it plans to respond to the regulator’s notice.
For the wider crypto industry, the move sends a clear signal that Dubai is serious about enforcing its licensing requirements. Companies looking to tap into the Middle East’s expanding digital asset market will likely need to prioritize compliance if they want to maintain access to one of the fastest growing crypto hubs in the world.
