Tether’s Blockchain Reset: Five Networks to Lose USDT Support

Tether, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin USDT, has announced plans to discontinue redemptions and freeze support on five underutilized blockchain networks: Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand. The move, set to take full effect by September 1, 2025, is part of Tether’s broader strategy to streamline operations and refocus on platforms that offer higher scalability, innovation, and community engagement. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino explained that these networks have seen declining usage and minimal development activity, prompting the company to reallocate resources toward more dynamic ecosystems, such as Ethereum, Tron, Solana, Avalanche, and Layer 2 solutions like the Lightning Network.

Among the affected networks, the Omni Layer—once Tether’s original issuance platform—still holds about $82 million worth of USDT, while Algorand, EOS, and others collectively host a much smaller share. The Algorand Foundation confirmed the shutdown will have limited impact, as USDT issuance on Algorand was already halted in 2023, with users given a one-year redemption window. Tether reassured users that any remaining USDT on these chains can still be redeemed or swapped through supported platforms before the deadline.

This sunset initiative reflects Tether’s evolving focus on blockchain performance, user demand, and infrastructure efficiency. By trimming less active networks, the company aims to bolster support for high-traffic blockchains that align with its long-term goals in stablecoin innovation and cross-border financial utility. While users on the legacy chains must take action before the cut-off date, the transition underscores a maturing stablecoin landscape where interoperability, liquidity, and network robustness increasingly define strategic decisions. The decision marks a notable shift in how stablecoin issuers assess blockchain value, prioritizing developer activity and ecosystem growth over early adoption legacy.
